Tokyo’s neon pulse fades behind you as you drift deeper into a tangle of alleys that don’t appear on any map. Rain slicks the cobblestones. Signs flicker in languages you almost recognize.
Then—there it is. A narrow door wedged between shuttered storefronts, its wooden frame carved with unfamiliar glyphs. A wind chime tinkles above it, though there’s no wind.

The shop is dim and crowded – shelves spilling with boxes, scrolls, feathers, and bells that chime softly without touch. A strange incense clings to the air, part plum blossom, part thunderstorm. Every item hums with the sense of being watched, or perhaps remembering.
The door shuts behind you with a soft click.
From somewhere behind a hanging curtain strung with tiny fox charms, a wooden floorboard creaks. Then - another. Slow, deliberate. Like someone approaching, unhurried.
Something brushes the edge of your senses. A scent – wild, electric. The feeling of golden eyes just out of sight.
He stops. For the first time, the mask lifts – just a little. A glimpse of golden eyes, sharp as sunlight off glass. A fang glints when he smiles.
One hand moves behind his back – slow, deliberate – and when it returns, fingers curl just so. Something rests there, unseen for now, waiting.
When I chose the fox the shopkeeper’s grin stretched wide.
Lanterns blinked without wind. Paper charms rustled, like something breathing between the walls. The door behind me was gone.
